View approved original text

This medication is used to replenish sodium and chloride when there is a deficiency of fluids and electrolytes in the body. It is also used as a diluent when administering other injectable medications to aid in their dissolution and dilution. Therefore, it improves electrolyte imbalance and supports the safe administration of injectables.

How it is given

Adult administration

Administer 20~1,000mL of sodium chloride, usually subcutaneously, intravenously, by intravenous infusion, or rectally. Adjust the dose and administration rate as appropriate according to age, body weight, and symptoms. Use an appropriate amount to dissolve or dilute injectable drugs.

Precautions

This medication should be handled very carefully during cutting of the glass container, as glass fragments may mix with the solution, especially when used for children or the elderly to avoid contamination with glass particles. This medication should not be administered to patients with hypernatremia, patients with excessive body fluid, and patients with cirrhosis who have edema and ascites. Patients with heart or circulatory dysfunction, impaired kidney function, low blood protein levels, and abnormal sodium or potassium levels should use this medication with special caution. If administered in large quantities or rapidly, side effects such as heart failure, edema, acidosis, and electrolyte imbalance may occur. Infection, pain, thrombosis, or phlebitis may occur at the injection site, so caution is required during administration. If any adverse reactions occur, administration should be stopped immediately, and the patient’s condition should be evaluated, receiving appropriate treatment, and if necessary, the remaining solution should be kept for testing. During treatment, the patient's fluid status, electrolyte concentration, and acid-base balance should be monitored regularly to closely observe any changes in condition. The container of this medication is made from PVC material that includes a plasticizer called DEHP, which can affect reproductive development in animal experiments, but exposure in humans is minimal and poses little risk. Therefore, the risks associated with not using this medication are far greater than the risks from DEHP exposure, making it safe for use. Particularly in the elderly, body function may be reduced, so careful attention is needed in adjusting the infusion rate and dosage. Before administration, check for color changes or precipitates in the solution, and ensure the patient's skin and injection equipment are thoroughly disinfected. In cold seasons, warm the solution to body temperature before use, and any remaining medicine should be discarded immediately after opening or mixing with other drugs.
