Efficacy & effects

This medication serves to replenish and regulate extracellular fluid when circulating blood volume and interstitial fluid are reduced. It also corrects metabolic acidosis to maintain the body's acid-base balance. Therefore, it is used to effectively improve body fluid and acid-base balance.

Dosage

In general adults, a single dose of 500-1,000mL is administered by slow intravenous infusion. The infusion rate is set at 300-500mL per hour (75-120 drops per minute). The dose and rate of administration should be adjusted appropriately based on age, weight, and symptoms.

Precautions

This drug may precipitate when mixed with ceftriaxone when used with intravenous calcium-containing preparations, so it should not be administered simultaneously through the same infusion device. An allergy reaction may occur while using this drug, so if hypersensitivity symptoms appear, administration should be stopped immediately, and appropriate treatment should be sought. Contains potassium, which poses a risk of hyperkalemia, i.e., elevated potassium levels in the blood. Patients with impaired kidney function or heart disease should be particularly cautious and may need to frequently check serum potassium levels. This drug may cause hypernatremia and hyperchloremia due to increased sodium and chloride levels, and symptoms associated with fluid overload may also occur, so patients with related conditions should use it with caution. Additionally, it may lead to hyponatremia, which is characterized by low sodium levels in the blood, especially in children, the elderly, and post-operative patients, who should be monitored closely, as severe symptoms may pose a risk of brain injury. It may also cause hypercalcemia, so it should be avoided in patients at risk of calcium kidney stones or hypercalcemia. This drug can affect body fluid and electrolyte balance, potentially leading to symptoms of fluid overload or pulmonary edema during administration. Patients' conditions should be monitored closely according to their status. Should not be administered to patients with lactic acidosis, fluid overload, hypernatremia, and those with hypersensitivity to this drug. Administration should be done carefully in patients with severely impaired kidney function, heart failure, or severe liver dysfunction, with thorough monitoring of blood tests and fluid status during administration. Rapid or large volume administration of this drug may result in side effects such as cerebral edema, pulmonary edema, or peripheral edema, hence caution is advised. When used with other medications, it is important to consider interactions, and extra caution is needed particularly when combined with drugs that can induce or worsen hyperkalemia, hyponatremia, or hypercalcemia. During pregnancy, it should only be used when necessary, considering risks to the fetus, and in children and the elderly, the infusion rate should be adjusted, and serum electrolyte levels should be checked frequently. Prior to administration, disinfect the patient's skin and the equipment to prevent infection, warm the solution to body temperature, and administer immediately after opening. The infusion rate should be administered slowly intravenously, and it should be stored at room temperature.
