A few days ago, I started hearing a crunching sound in my ear. I kept putting up with it, telling myself, “It’ll probably get better,” but it was so uncomfortable that I could still hear it before going to bed. So I took some time off on Friday and searched for an ENT clinic near Sanggye Station. There were lots of comments saying the doctor was unfriendly, and quite a few people said they had even gotten into an argument there. I started laughing as I read the reviews. Seriously, there are still clinics like this these days?! But after slowly reading through quite a few reviews one by one, the conclusion was that the doctor may be unfriendly, but is very good at diagnosing and treating people! Oh, I see~ Isn’t that better than someone who’s friendly but not very good at their job?! (Am I actually a pretty positive person?!) I thought I had to experience this for myself, so I went in. There were two front-desk staff members, and perhaps because of all the reviews saying they were unfriendly(?) there were no other patients at all. (Hey... you two are getting paid properly, right?) The clinic was in an old building, but the inside was quite clean. After I checked in, I was called into the exam room! Finally! My heart was pounding! I wondered, “They’re not going to say, ‘What are you here for?!’ the moment I walk in, are they?” With curiosity and fear in my heart (I’m an introvert, after all), I entered the exam room.!! The doctor was wearing a mask, as an ENT specialist should! (This is really basic, but there are quite a few ENT doctors who don’t do this.) The doctor asked me various questions and explained my symptoms. Huh? They weren’t unfriendly at all? I asked a few questions about things I was curious about. The doctor explained everything calmly and clearly. What on earth had the people who said in their reviews that the doctor snapped at them actually asked? Did they ask something like, “But I heard it’s like this on the internet”? When patients ask questions like that, I honestly want to go in there and smack them upside the head. At this point, I almost want to hear both sides of the story. Is their standard for “friendly” based on pediatricians? Do they think someone is unfriendly just because they don’t smile, greet you warmly, and chat with you? I really don’t get it. By my standards as an introvert, I didn’t feel that the doctor was unfriendly at all. If extremely unfriendly is -5 and extremely friendly is +5, I’d rate the doctor’s friendliness at about +1. The fact that the doctor took the time to calmly answer the questions I had definitely earns a +1 for friendliness. People who know, know this, but people who had a good experience usually don’t write reviews. Most of the people who write reviews are those who were dissatisfied or felt that things didn’t meet their standards. That’s why there are many people who simply leave five stars, but most of the people who actually write something leave negative reviews. If you let those negative reviews sway you and take this clinic off your list of places to visit, in my personal opinion, you’ll be missing out on a pretty valuable opportunity. Rather than going to a clinic packed with elderly people who come to ENT clinics for every little cough or runny nose, where even the doctor and front-desk staff are friendly but you have to wait an hour just to be seen, a clinic with no waiting patients and a specialist who examines you thoroughly and efficiently is much more accessible to me. I thought I’d go somewhere else next time if today’s visit wasn’t great, but I plan to come back here again. If anyone saw the negative comments and thought, “Oh, maybe I shouldn’t go there,” I recommend giving it a try at least once, even if you have to take a chance. There may not be a staff member or doctor who greets you with a bright smile and says, “Welcome!” but there is a doctor who is quick, makes you feel comfortable, and lets you ask everything you’re curious about. Go here! If your body and your time are precious to you!
