What does it do?

Clavulanic acid potassium is a beta-lactamase inhibitor used in conjunction with beta-lactam antibiotics. This ingredient inhibits bacterial enzymes that reduce the efficacy of antibiotics, thereby increasing therapeutic effect. It is primarily used in the treatment of infections together with amoxicillin.

The enzyme called beta-lactamase, produced by bacteria, breaks down antibiotics and diminishes their effectiveness. Clavulanic acid potassium prevents this enzyme from functioning, helping the antibiotics to work properly. As a result, the antibiotics can also be effective against resistant bacteria.

Approved uses differ by product. Check each product's information for its actual use.

Good to know

Clavulanic acid potassium is not an antibiotic used alone; it must be used with a beta-lactam antibiotic to be effective. Compared to other beta-lactamase inhibitors, its combination with amoxicillin has demonstrated good stability and efficacy.
