What does it do?

Bethanechol chloride is an autonomic stimulant with cholinergic action, primarily used for treating motility disorders of the bladder and gastrointestinal tract. This ingredient stimulates the receptors of the parasympathetic nervous system to aid in muscle contraction.

Bethanechol chloride acts on the muscarinic receptors of the parasympathetic nervous system, causing contraction of the smooth muscles of the bladder and gastrointestinal tract. This facilitates urine expulsion and regular gastrointestinal movement.

Commonly used for

Approved uses differ by product. Check each product's information for its actual use.

Good to know

Unlike other cholinergic drugs, bethanechol chloride primarily acts selectively on muscarinic receptors to reduce side effects. Additionally, unlike acetylcholine, it is not rapidly broken down by cholinesterase, leading to a longer duration of effect.
