Lamivudine is an antiviral medication used in the treatment of hepatitis B and HIV infections.
MFDS ingredient code M086332
Lamivudine belongs to the class of nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors. It is primarily used to inhibit the replication of the hepatitis B virus and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). This ingredient disrupts the replication of the viral genetic material, preventing the spread of the infection.
Lamivudine blocks reverse transcriptase, an enzyme that is necessary for the virus to replicate its genetic material. As a result, the virus is unable to multiply, and the infection is suppressed. Consequently, the patient's viral load decreases, helping alleviate symptoms and inhibit disease progression.
Approved uses differ by product. Check each product's information for its actual use.
Lamivudine has a relatively low risk of developing resistance compared to other reverse transcriptase inhibitors and is effective against both hepatitis B and HIV. Furthermore, it has comparatively fewer side effects, making it suitable for long-term treatment.
Even with the same ingredient, strength, dosage form and how it is taken can differ.
