What does it do?

Glyburide is an oral blood glucose-lowering agent of the sulfonylurea class, used to lower blood glucose by stimulating insulin secretion. It is primarily prescribed to assist in the control of blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Glyburide acts on the beta cells of the pancreas to increase insulin secretion. As a result, glucose in the blood is more efficiently absorbed by the cells, leading to lower blood glucose levels.

Good to know

Glyburide has a stronger blood glucose-lowering effect compared to other sulfonylurea drugs while having a relatively lower risk of hypoglycemia. Additionally, aside from stimulating insulin secretion, there have been reports of its action in improving insulin sensitivity in peripheral tissues, which serves as a distinguishing feature.
