What does it do?

Calcium acetate is a type of calcium salt used to supplement calcium in the body and to lower serum phosphorus levels. It is primarily utilized in the treatment of hyperphosphatemia in patients with chronic kidney failure.

Calcium acetate binds with phosphorus in the intestine, reducing the absorption of phosphorus. As a result, serum phosphorus levels are controlled, preventing phosphorus overload in patients with decreased kidney function.

Good to know

Unlike other calcium salts, calcium acetate has an excellent ability to bind with phosphorus due to the presence of acetate ions. It is also effective in treating hyperphosphatemia by simultaneously supplying calcium and binding with phosphorus.
