What does it do?

Tropicamide is an anticholinergic drug primarily used in ophthalmology to dilate the pupil. This ingredient temporarily paralyzes the muscles around the pupil, helping it to enlarge. This allows for a detailed observation of the inside of the eye.

Tropicamide causes the muscles in the iris of the eye to become paralyzed, resulting in pupil dilation. When the pupil is dilated, the ophthalmologist can see inside the eye better, making the examination easier. Additionally, due to paralysis of the ciliary muscle, adjusting the focus of the eye becomes temporarily difficult.

Good to know

Unlike other pupil dilators, tropicamide has a short duration of action and a rapid onset of effect. Furthermore, when used in conjunction with phenylephrine, they complement each other for more effective pupil dilation. It has relatively few side effects and is widely used in ophthalmic examinations.
