What does it do?

Isoniazid is a drug in the antitubercular class used to treat Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is primarily used to inhibit and treat tuberculosis infections. It prevents the proliferation of tubercle bacilli, thereby slowing or stopping the progression of the disease.

Isoniazid interrupts the synthesis of the cell wall of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, preventing the bacteria from growing and reproducing. As a result, the tubercle bacilli weaken and eventually die. It plays a role in effectively suppressing the tubercle bacilli in the body.

Good to know

Isoniazid is a specialized antitubercular agent for the treatment of tuberculosis, targeting the cell wall of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, unlike other antibiotics. This leads to a selective efficacy against the bacilli, and it can be used alone or in combination with other antitubercular drugs.
