What does it do?

As a prostaglandin analog, misoprostol plays a role in protecting the gastric mucosa and regulating gastric acid secretion. It is used in the treatment of peptic ulcers and helps prevent damage to the gastric mucosa.

Misoprostol acts on gastric mucosal cells to increase mucus and bicarbonate secretion, inhibiting gastric acid secretion and protecting the stomach lining. This reduces mucosal damage caused by gastric acid and aids in ulcer healing.

Good to know

Unlike other gastric acid suppressants, misoprostol has excellent gastric mucosal protective effects and is particularly effective in preventing gastric damage induced by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Additionally, it can induce uterine contractions, so caution is required during pregnancy.
