What does it do?

Tolvaptan belongs to the class of vasopressin receptor antagonists and is used to manage excessive water retention in the body. It is primarily utilized for the treatment of edema and hyponatremia caused by conditions such as heart failure or cirrhosis.

Tolvaptan works by blocking vasopressin receptors in the kidneys, reducing water reabsorption and increasing the amount of water excreted in the urine. This results in the excretion of excess water retained in the body, alleviating edema and normalizing blood sodium levels.

Good to know

Unlike traditional diuretics, Tolvaptan notably does not significantly increase sodium excretion and selectively promotes the elimination of water. This makes it particularly effective for the treatment of hyponatremia and distinguishes it from other vasopressin antagonists.
