What does it do?

Ezetimibe is a drug that selectively blocks the absorption of cholesterol in the intestines. It is primarily used to lower blood cholesterol levels and prevent cardiovascular diseases related to atherosclerosis. It can enhance its effectiveness when used in combination with other lipid-lowering agents.

Ezetimibe reduces the amount of cholesterol absorbed from food and bile by inhibiting cholesterol transport proteins in the intestinal wall. As a result, the concentration of cholesterol in the blood decreases, and the accumulation of cholesterol in the arteries is reduced, promoting vascular health.

Approved uses differ by product. Check each product's information for its actual use.

Good to know

Unlike statins, ezetimibe has a unique mechanism of action that does not directly inhibit cholesterol synthesis in the liver but blocks its absorption in the intestines. Therefore, it exhibits complementary effects when used in combination with statins.
