What does it do?

Clopidogrel bisulfate belongs to the class of antiplatelet agents that regulate platelet function. It is primarily used to reduce the risk of thrombosis due to atherosclerosis. It prevents platelets in the blood from clumping together, inhibiting thrombus formation within blood vessels.

Clopidogrel bisulfate blocks specific receptors on the surface of platelets, preventing them from sticking to each other. This reduces the risk of thrombus formation, thereby lowering the likelihood of vascular occlusion. Consequently, it decreases the incidence of thromboembolic disorders such as heart attacks or strokes.

Good to know

Unlike aspirin, clopidogrel bisulfate selectively inhibits the ADP receptors on platelets. This differentiates it in terms of bleeding risk and drug interactions. Additionally, it is often used in place of or in combination with aspirin in certain patients.
