What does it do?

Propafenone hydrochloride is an antiarrhythmic agent that works to regulate heart rhythm. This ingredient is used to stabilize the transmission of electrical signals in the heart, correcting irregular heartbeats. It is primarily prescribed when heartbeats are abnormally fast or irregular.

Propafenone hydrochloride blocks sodium channels in cardiac muscle cells, slowing the rate of conduction of electrical signals. As a result, abnormal electrical signals in the heart are reduced, and normal rhythm is maintained. Consequently, heartbeats are regulated regularly.

Good to know

Unlike other antiarrhythmics, propafenone hydrochloride has a slight beta-blocking effect in addition to its sodium channel blocking properties. Because of this, it is effective in treating various arrhythmias even as a single component. Moreover, it is highly lipophilic, which allows it to act relatively long in the body.
