What does it do?

Febuxostat is a medication that inhibits uric acid production, primarily used for the treatment of gout. It prevents excessive uric acid production during the purine metabolism process, thereby lowering serum uric acid levels. This helps relieve gout attacks and associated symptoms.

Febuxostat selectively inhibits the enzyme xanthine oxidase that produces uric acid in the body. As a result, uric acid production decreases, lowering serum uric acid levels. Consequently, it prevents the accumulation of uric acid crystals in the joints, alleviating gout symptoms.

Good to know

Febuxostat is a selective and potent xanthine oxidase inhibitor, unlike traditional uric acid production inhibitors such as allopurinol. It has the advantage of being relatively safe to use in patients with impaired kidney function. Additionally, it is used as an alternative for patients who are allergic to allopurinol.
