What does it do?

Lopinavir belongs to the class of antiretroviral drugs that inhibit the replication of the HIV virus. It is primarily used to reduce the viral load in HIV-infected patients and to protect immune function.

Lopinavir blocks the protease enzyme necessary for HIV virus replication, preventing the virus from replicating normally. This leads to a decrease in viral load and a recovery of the immune system.

Approved uses differ by product. Check each product's information for its actual use.

Good to know

Unlike other antiretroviral drugs, Lopinavir acts as a protease inhibitor, and in the combination drug Kaletra, it is used together with Ritonavir to enhance efficacy. This combination helps to slow drug metabolism and maintain Lopinavir's blood concentration.
