What does it do?

Theobromine is an alkaloid that is used to relieve irritative cough and phlegm symptoms. It primarily reduces coughing and helps to thin mucus in respiratory diseases, facilitating its expulsion. It is used as an antitussive and expectorant for improving cough and phlegm symptoms.

Theobromine relaxes the bronchial smooth muscles, widening the airway passages and regulating mucus secretion to thin the phlegm. As a result, coughing is reduced, and phlegm is expelled more easily. It also acts on the central nervous system to alleviate the cough reflex.

Good to know

Theobromine has a structure similar to caffeine but has a weaker central nervous system stimulating effect compared to caffeine and is more specialized in bronchodilation and mucus regulation. Unlike other antitussive and expectorant agents, it has less cardiac stimulation or strong awakening effects, making it suitable for treating cough and phlegm.
