What does it do?

Drospirenone is a component of the synthetic luteal hormone (progestin) class, used for regulating female reproductive hormones. It is primarily included in oral contraceptives to prevent pregnancy.

Drospirenone regulates the female menstrual cycle by suppressing ovulation and altering the uterine lining to make it difficult for a fertilized egg to implant. It also thickens cervical mucus to impede the movement of sperm.

Good to know

Unlike other progestins, drospirenone has anti-androgenic and anti-mineralocorticoid properties, which may reduce fluid retention and help improve acne. These characteristics make it preferred in some contraceptives.
