What does it do?

Azacitidine is a drug used as an antitumor agent, primarily for the treatment of hematologic cancers. It affects the synthesis of DNA in cells, preventing the growth of cancer cells. It is mainly used for the treatment of blood-related malignant tumors such as myelodysplastic syndromes.

Azacitidine binds to the DNA of cancer cells, disrupting normal DNA replication. This suppresses the process of division and proliferation of cancer cells, thereby slowing the growth of tumors. It also regulates gene expression in cancer cells, inducing apoptosis.

Good to know

Unlike other anticancer agents, azacitidine features the ability to correct genetic alterations in cancer cells through DNA methylation inhibition. This distinguishes it from simple cytotoxic effects as it also regulates cancer cells at the genetic level. Therefore, it demonstrates specific efficacy in the treatment of certain hematologic cancers.
