What does it do?

Celecoxib belongs to the class of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is mainly used to relieve inflammation and pain, such as in arthritis or musculoskeletal pain. It also has antipyretic effects, helping in febrile conditions.

Celecoxib selectively inhibits the enzyme cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), which causes inflammation and pain. This reduces the production of inflammatory mediators, alleviating pain and swelling. It has minimal effects on COX-1, resulting in relatively fewer gastrointestinal side effects.

Good to know

Unlike traditional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, celecoxib selectively inhibits only COX-2, reducing the risk of gastrointestinal disturbances. Consequently, there tend to be fewer side effects, such as gastrointestinal bleeding, with long-term use. However, caution should be exercised regarding the potential for cardiovascular side effects.
