What does it do?

Ampicillin is an antibiotic belonging to the penicillin class and is used to treat infections caused by various gram-positive and some gram-negative bacteria. It is primarily effective for respiratory, urinary, skin, and soft tissue infections.

Ampicillin works by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, preventing bacteria from growing or reproducing. As a result, bacteria are killed or infection is suppressed.

Approved uses differ by product. Check each product's information for its actual use.

Good to know

Ampicillin has a relatively broad effect against gram-negative bacteria among penicillin antibiotics. Unlike other penicillins, it is somewhat stable in gastric acid, allowing for oral administration.
