What does it do?

Noscapine is an alkaloid classified as an antitussive. It is primarily used in medications to alleviate cough. It does not have antipyretic or analgesic effects and is specialized in reducing cough.

Noscapine acts on the cough center in the brain to inhibit the cough reflex. As a result, the frequency and intensity of coughing decrease, providing comfort to the patient. It acts directly on the central nervous system, but unlike narcotic antitussives, it has low analgesic effects and dependency potential.

Approved uses differ by product. Check each product's information for its actual use.

Good to know

Unlike narcotic antitussives such as codeine, noscapine has a low risk of addiction and does not have analgesic effects. Additionally, it does not increase mucus secretion, resulting in weak expectorant action. These characteristics make it primarily used for cough suppression.
