What does it do?

Benserazide hydrochloride is a medication used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease, functioning alongside levodopa to compensate for the deficiency of dopamine in the central nervous system. This ingredient prevents the dopamine precursor, levodopa, from being broken down in peripheral tissues before reaching the brain, thereby enhancing its efficacy.

Benserazide hydrochloride helps ensure that more levodopa enters the brain and is converted into dopamine by inhibiting its breakdown in peripheral tissues before reaching the brain. As a result, the concentration of dopamine necessary to alleviate Parkinson's disease symptoms increases.

Approved uses differ by product. Check each product's information for its actual use.

Good to know

Unlike other medications that inhibit dopamine breakdown, benserazide hydrochloride does not cross the blood-brain barrier and acts only outside the central nervous system. This characteristic plays a crucial role in reducing side effects and enhancing therapeutic effects when used with levodopa.
