MFDS ingredient code M273071
Cetylpyridinium chloride is a cationic surfactant used in pharmaceuticals to suppress bacteria in the mouth and throat. It is mainly included in oral rinses or throat lozenges to reduce bacterial growth in the oral cavity and assist in preventing infections.
Cetylpyridinium chloride kills bacteria or inhibits their growth by binding to the bacterial cell membrane and disrupting it. This reduces the number of bacteria in the mouth and throat, thus preventing inflammation and infections.
Approved uses differ by product. Check each product's information for its actual use.
Unlike other oral antiseptics, cetylpyridinium chloride has a strong action on bacterial cell membranes due to its cationic properties. It is also relatively less irritating, making it safe for use on oral mucosa.
Even with the same ingredient, strength, dosage form and how it is taken can differ.
