What does it do?

Anastrozole belongs to the class of aromatase inhibitors and is primarily used for the treatment of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer in postmenopausal women. This ingredient inhibits the growth of cancer cells by reducing estrogen production in the body.

Anastrozole works by blocking the enzyme aromatase, preventing androgens from being converted into estrogens. When estrogen levels decrease, the proliferation of hormone-dependent breast cancer cells is inhibited.

Good to know

Anastrozole has a higher selectivity and longer half-life compared to other aromatase inhibitors, allowing for effective maintenance with once daily dosing. It is also prescribed mainly to postmenopausal women due to its relatively stable side effect profile.
