What does it do?

Amoxicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic that disrupts the synthesis of bacterial cell walls to treat infections. Potassium clavulanate inhibits an enzyme called beta-lactamase, helping to prevent the breakdown of amoxicillin. This combination is effective against various gram-positive and gram-negative bacterial infections.

Amoxicillin interferes with the process of building bacterial cell walls, preventing bacteria from growing or multiplying. Potassium clavulanate prevents the enzyme produced by bacteria from destroying amoxicillin, maintaining the effectiveness of the antibiotic. As a result, it provides treatment efficacy against a broader range of bacteria.

Good to know

When amoxicillin is used alone, its effectiveness may decrease due to beta-lactamase producing bacteria; however, potassium clavulanate inhibits this, overcoming resistance. This combination is distinguished by its ability to address a wider range of bacteria compared to a single antibiotic.
