This is a classification of drugs that suppress or alleviate vomiting.

Representative ingredients

The ingredients most often used in single-ingredient medicines of this type.

Commonly used for

What kind of medicines are these?

These medications are used to relieve symptoms of vomiting or nausea. They are primarily used to prevent or treat vomiting associated with gastrointestinal disorders, side effects of medications, or post-surgical procedures.

Medications in this class suppress the vomiting response by blocking or modulating signals that induce vomiting in the central nervous system or gastrointestinal tract. Some act directly on the vomiting center in the brain, while others regulate gastrointestinal motility.

Good to know

Unlike other classifications with similar names, antiemetics and emetics are not drugs that induce or promote vomiting, but rather drugs that suppress it. Therefore, their mechanisms of action and uses differ from those of medications that induce vomiting.
