Vasodilators

MFDS drug class 02170

Vasodilators are drugs that widen blood vessels to improve blood flow.

Representative ingredients

The ingredients most often used in single-ingredient medicines of this type.

Commonly used for

What kind of medicines are these?

Vasodilators are used to widen blood vessels and facilitate blood circulation. They are primarily used in the treatment of hypertension, angina, and peripheral vascular disease. They help lower intravascular pressure and increase oxygen supply to tissues.

Vasodilators relax vascular smooth muscle, widening the diameter of blood vessels. This reduces blood flow resistance and lowers blood pressure. Some drugs improve endothelial cell function or act on specific receptors to induce vasodilation.

Good to know

Vasodilators are classified into several types based on their mechanism of action and target vessels. For example, calcium channel blockers, nitrates, and alpha blockers, each have different action sites and effects. They are distinguished from other antihypertensives by their characteristic of directly dilating blood vessels.
