Vasoconstrictors are a classification of drugs that constrict blood vessels to regulate blood flow.
Vasoconstrictors are used to narrow blood vessels, reduce blood flow, or raise blood pressure. They are primarily used to alleviate symptoms such as hypotension, nasal congestion, and bleeding. They are also used to reduce bleeding during surgery or relieve congestion.
These medications act on vascular smooth muscle to cause vasoconstriction. This results in a narrowing of the diameter within the blood vessels, leading to decreased blood flow or increased blood pressure. They primarily work by stimulating the sympathetic nervous system receptors.
In contrast to vasodilators, vasoconstrictors work to narrow blood vessels. Vasoconstrictors are mainly used for blood pressure control or suppression of bleeding, while vasodilators are used for improving blood flow or lowering blood pressure.
Even within the same class, dosage form and prescription status can differ.
