This medication is used to improve hypocalcemia, tetany, and bone pain or lesions caused by vitamin D metabolism disorders such as chronic renal failure, hypoparathyroidism, vitamin D-resistant rickets, and osteomalacia. It is also effective for the treatment of osteoporosis, thus it is helpful for patients with issues related to bone health and calcium balance.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

Chronic renal failure and osteoporosis: Administer 0.5 to 1 µg orally once daily as alfacalcidol. Hypoparathyroidism and other diseases due to vitamin D metabolism disorders: Administer 1 to 4 µg orally once daily.

Children's dosage

Osteoporosis: Administer 0.01 to 0.03 µg per kg of body weight orally once daily as alfacalcidol. Other conditions: Administer 0.05 to 0.1 µg per kg of body weight orally once daily.

Precautions

This drug should not be used in patients with hypercalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, or hypermagnesemia. It should also be avoided if the product of calcium and phosphorus in the blood exceeds a certain level. Patients who have alkalosis or symptoms of vitamin D toxicity should not use this drug either. If there is an allergy to any components of this drug or vitamin D analogs, it should be avoided. It contains lactose, so patients with hereditary lactose intolerance or related conditions should exercise caution. While taking this medication, the risk of side effects increases if taken with magnesium-containing drugs, vitamin D preparations, calcium supplements, or certain diuretics, therefore, they should not be taken together. It is advisable to avoid breastfeeding while taking this medication, and if unavoidable, it is preferable to discontinue breastfeeding. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should consult with a doctor before taking this medication as it may be harmful to the fetus. Dosing may need to be adjusted and caution is necessary for children and the elderly due to physiological differences. Patients on certain medications should consult with a professional due to the possibility of drug interactions. Patients with kidney stones or sarcoidosis should always consult with a doctor before taking this medication. During the use of this medication, various symptoms associated with hypercalcemia may occur, such as digestive disturbances, neurological abnormalities, heart problems, decreased kidney function, liver dysfunction, skin rashes, eye problems, and bone pain. If such symptoms occur, stop taking the medication immediately and consult a professional. Regularly check serum calcium and phosphorus levels to maintain them within normal ranges, and in cases of hyperphosphatemia, dietary phosphorus restriction and phosphate binders may be necessary. In case of overdose, stop taking the medication immediately and seek appropriate treatment, including possible emergency measures such as inducing vomiting or gastric lavage. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Do not transfer to another container to prevent misuse or abuse.
