This medication is used to improve symptoms related to vitamin D metabolism disorders, such as chronic kidney disease, hypoparathyroidism, vitamin D-resistant rickets, and osteomalacia, for example, hypocalcemia, tetany, bone pain, and bone lesions. It is also effectively used in the treatment of osteoporosis.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

Chronic kidney disease and osteoporosis: Administer orally 0.5-1 µg once daily as Alfacalcidol. Hypoparathyroidism and diseases due to other vitamin D metabolic disorders: Administer orally 1-4 µg once daily as this medication.

Children's dosage

Osteoporosis: Administer orally 0.01-0.03 µg per kg body weight once daily as Alfacalcidol. Other conditions: Administer orally 0.05-0.1 µg per kg body weight once daily as this medication.

Precautions

This medication should not be taken by patients with hypercalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, or hypermagnesemia. People with specific blood conditions like the high product of calcium and phosphorus in the blood or alkalosis should also avoid taking this medication. It should be avoided if there are symptoms of vitamin D toxicity or if there is an allergy to this medication or its components. Patients with a genetic issue that prevents the breakdown of lactose should not take this medication. During treatment, it is recommended to avoid medications that may increase the risk of hypercalcemia or hypermagnesemia, such as magnesium-containing products, vitamin D and its derivatives, calcium-containing preparations, or certain diuretics. Women who are breastfeeding should preferably avoid this medication as its safety has not been established; if unavoidable, they should refrain from breastfeeding. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant should consult a physician before taking this medication, as it may affect the fetus. Children and the elderly should carefully adjust the dosage and may require dose adjustments or caution if taking specific medications due to interactions. Patients with a history of kidney stones or sarcoidosis should also discuss with a healthcare professional before taking this medication. While taking this medication, various symptoms related to hypercalcemia may appear, such as indigestion, vomiting, muscle cramps, headache, heart irregularities, decreased kidney function, liver dysfunction, skin rashes, visual disturbances, and bone pain. If any of these symptoms occur, the medication should be stopped immediately, and a professional should be consulted. Regularly check serum calcium levels to maintain them within the normal range, and in the case of hyperphosphatemia, one may take phosphate binders with phosphate intake control. In case of overdose, discontinue the medication immediately and receive appropriate treatment. Emergency measures such as inducing vomiting or gastric lavage may be necessary if required. This medication should be stored out of the reach of children and protected from direct sunlight in a cool, dry place. It is also important not to transfer the medication to another container to maintain its quality.
