This medication is used to improve symptoms such as hypocalcemia, muscle spasms (tetany), bone pain, and bone lesions resulting from vitamin D metabolism disorders associated with conditions such as chronic renal failure, hypoparathyroidism, vitamin D-resistant rickets, and osteomalacia. It is also effective in treating osteoporosis. This medication helps maintain bone health and alleviate symptoms, contributing to improving patients' quality of life.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

Chronic renal failure and osteoporosis: Administer Alfacalcidol orally at a dosage of 0.5 to 1 ㎍ once daily. Hypoparathyroidism and other diseases related to vitamin D metabolism disorders: Administer this medication orally at a dosage of 1 to 4 ㎍ once daily.

Children's dosage

Osteoporosis: Administer Alfacalcidol orally at a dosage of 0.01 to 0.03 ㎍ per kg of body weight once daily. Other conditions: Administer this medication orally at a dosage of 0.05 to 0.1 ㎍ per kg of body weight once daily.

Precautions

This medication should be avoided in patients with hypercalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, and hypermagnesemia, which are states of abnormally high levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood. Patients with alkalosis, a condition where the acid-base balance of the blood is skewed towards alkalinity, or those exhibiting symptoms of vitamin D toxicity should also refrain from taking this medication. Those who have an allergic reaction to any components in this medication or have genetic metabolic disorders like lactose intolerance should avoid taking this drug. During treatment, it is important not to take this medication in conjunction with magnesium, vitamin D derivatives, calcium-containing preparations, or certain diuretics. Women who are breastfeeding should avoid taking this medication unless absolutely necessary, and if unavoidable, should consider stopping breastfeeding. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should consult a doctor before taking this medication as it may pose a risk to the fetus. Children, the elderly, patients on certain medications, and those with a history of kidney stones or sarcoidosis should consult a healthcare professional before use. During treatment with this medication, various symptoms related to hypercalcemia may occur, such as indigestion, muscle spasms, headaches, heart irregularities, and decreased renal function. If such symptoms appear, discontinue use immediately and consult a healthcare provider. Regularly monitor serum calcium levels to maintain them within normal ranges, and in cases of overdose, prompt emergency treatment may be required. Store this medication away from direct sunlight in a cool and dry place, ensuring it is kept out of reach of children.
