This medication helps improve hypocalcemia, tetany, bone pain, and lesions due to vitamin D metabolism abnormalities occurring in conditions such as chronic renal failure, hypoparathyroidism, vitamin D resistant rickets, and osteomalacia. It is also used for the treatment of osteoporosis to increase bone strength and reduce fracture risk. Therefore, this drug is used for improving various bone diseases and symptoms of vitamin D metabolism abnormalities.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

Chronic renal failure and osteoporosis: Administer 0.5–1 µg orally once daily as Alfacalcidol. Hypoparathyroidism and other conditions related to vitamin D metabolism abnormalities: Administer 1–4 µg orally once daily as this medication.

Children's dosage

Osteoporosis: Administer 0.01–0.03 µg per kg body weight orally once daily as Alfacalcidol. Other diseases: Administer 0.05–0.1 µg per kg body weight orally once daily as this medication.

Precautions

This medication should not be taken by patients with high levels of calcium, phosphorus, or magnesium in the blood, or by patients with alkalosis. It should also be avoided if experiencing symptoms of vitamin D toxicity or if allergic to this drug. It is important not to take this medication concurrently with magnesium-containing preparations, vitamin D and its derivatives, calcium-containing preparations, or certain diuretics. During breastfeeding, it is advisable to avoid use if the safety is not established; if it must be taken, consider stopping breastfeeding. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should consult a physician about the potential effects on the fetus before taking it. Caution is needed for children, the elderly, those with a history of kidney stones, and patients taking certain medications, and they should consult an expert. If any abnormal symptoms occur while taking this medication, it should be discontinued immediately and medical advice should be sought. Adverse effects can occur in various areas including the digestive system, nervous system, circulatory system, kidneys, liver, skin, eyes, and musculoskeletal system, hence careful observation is required.
