This drug is used to improve symptoms such as hypocalcemia, tetany, bone pain, and lesions that occur in vitamin D metabolism disorders such as chronic renal failure, hypoparathyroidism, vitamin D resistant rickets, and osteomalacia. It is also effective in the treatment of osteoporosis. In other words, this drug contributes to the alleviation and treatment of symptoms related to various diseases concerning bone health.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

Chronic renal failure and osteoporosis: Administer 0.5 to 1 µg orally once daily as Alfacalcidol. Hypoparathyroidism and other diseases due to vitamin D metabolism disorders: Administer 1 to 4 µg orally once daily as this drug.

Children's dosage

Osteoporosis: Administer 0.01 to 0.03 µg per kg of body weight orally once daily as Alfacalcidol. Other conditions: Administer 0.05 to 0.1 µg per kg of body weight orally once daily as this drug.

Precautions

This drug should not be taken by individuals with excessively high levels of calcium and phosphorus in the blood. Particularly, patients with hypercalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, or hypermagnesemia should not use this drug. Patients with elevated blood pH (alkalosis) or symptoms of vitamin D toxicity should also refrain from taking it. If there is an allergy to any ingredients in this drug, it should also be avoided. While taking this drug, magnesium-containing medications or vitamin D preparations, calcium-containing drugs, and certain diuretics should not be taken together. Taking these drugs together may dangerously elevate blood calcium levels. Lactating women should be cautious when taking this drug and it is advisable to avoid breastfeeding if possible. If it is absolutely necessary to take it, it is safest to stop breastfeeding. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant must consult a physician before taking this drug. It is also important for children, the elderly, patients with a history of kidney stones, and those taking certain medications to consult a specialist before use. If any unusual symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, headache, dizziness, palpitations, or renal function decline occur while taking this drug, immediately discontinue use and consult a physician. In particular, hypercalcemia, characterized by elevated serum calcium levels, can cause serious side effects, so regular blood tests should be conducted to monitor the condition. When taking this drug, strictly adhere to the prescribed dosage and manage calcium intake as well. Overdose may lead to serious side effects, so caution is needed. This drug should be stored out of reach of children, away from direct sunlight, in a cool, dry place. Additionally, it is helpful to keep it in its original packaging and not transfer it to another container to maintain quality.
