This medication is used for improving hypocalcemia, tetany, bone pain, and bone lesions caused by vitamin D metabolism disorders such as chronic renal failure, hypoparathyroidism, vitamin D resistant rickets, and osteomalacia. It is also effective for the treatment of osteoporosis, specifically for improving symptoms associated with various bone diseases related to vitamin D metabolism and osteoporosis.

How to take

Adult dose

Chronic renal failure and osteoporosis: Administer 0.5 to 1 µg of alfacalcidol orally once a day. Hypoparathyroidism and other diseases due to vitamin D metabolism disorders: Administer 1 to 4 µg of this medication orally once a day.

Child dose

Osteoporosis: Administer 0.01 to 0.03 µg of alfacalcidol per kg of body weight orally once a day. Other diseases: Administer 0.05 to 0.1 µg of this medication per kg of body weight orally once a day.

Precautions

This medication should not be taken by patients with hypercalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, or hypermagnesemia, or by those with calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood exceeding certain limits. Additionally, it should be avoided by patients with alkalosis, signs of vitamin D toxicity, or anyone allergic to this medication or its ingredients. While taking this medication, it is advised to avoid concurrent use with magnesium-containing drugs, vitamin D and its derivatives, calcium-containing preparations, or certain diuretics, as this may increase the risk of side effects or hypercalcemia. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should consult a doctor before taking this medication, and caution is also necessary for children and the elderly. In particular, patients with a history of kidney stones, those taking specific medications, or those with certain diseases like sarcoidosis should consult a specialist before using this medication. During treatment, various symptoms may arise due to hypercalcemia, such as indigestion, headaches, muscle spasms, heart irregularities, or decreased kidney function; if these symptoms appear, stop taking the medication immediately and consult a physician. Regularly check serum calcium levels and kidney function; if abnormalities are found, appropriate measures should be taken. This medication is not recommended for breastfeeding women, and if its use is necessary, nursing should be avoided. During use, adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage and dietary guidelines, and avoid overdose. In case of overdose, stop taking the medication immediately and seek emergency treatment, and carefully monitor until serum calcium levels return to normal. Store this medication out of reach of children, avoiding direct sunlight, in a cool and dry place. To prevent misuse or deterioration, it is important not to transfer it to another container.
