Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used to assist in the dietary and exercise regimen to enhance blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. In particular, it effectively aids blood sugar management by combining empagliflozin and linagliptin. This treatment contributes to controlling blood sugar levels, reducing the risk of complications and improving the health of the patient.
The recommended starting dose of this medication is one time a day at 10 mg of empagliflozin and 5 mg of linagliptin. If well tolerated and additional blood sugar control is needed, the dose can be increased to 25/5 mg once daily. Patients transitioning from another regimen of empagliflozin and linagliptin should continue with their previous dosage. This medication can be taken regardless of meals. The tablet should be swallowed whole. If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered; however, if the next scheduled dose is within 12 hours, skip the missed dose and continue as planned.
This medication contains two components, empagliflozin and linagliptin, and is primarily used to assist in blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. This medication should not be used in patients allergic to empagliflozin or linagliptin, or any other components present in this drug. Additionally, it should not be administered to patients with type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or those undergoing dialysis treatment. Patients with impaired kidney function may experience reduced effectiveness of this medication; thus, regular kidney function tests should be conducted before and during treatment. There is limited experience with this medication in patients with heart failure, so it should be used cautiously, and if any acute pancreatitis symptoms arise, the medication should be discontinued immediately and medical advice sought. While taking this medication, there may be symptoms of pancreatitis, such as persistent and severe abdominal pain; caution is advised, and if any blistering on the skin or symptoms similar to pemphigus appear, the medication should be stopped immediately. The most common side effect reported is urinary tract infection, and adverse effects such as hypoglycemia, pancreatitis, and hypersensitivity reactions have also been noted. Caution is required, especially when used with other blood sugar-lowering agents like insulin or sulfonylureas, as the risk of hypoglycemia increases. This medication may cause fluid loss; thus, it should be used carefully in patients with low blood pressure or cardiovascular disease, as well as in elderly patients. In cases of dehydration, the medication may need to be temporarily discontinued. Moreover, this drug can increase the risk of genital fungal infections, so appropriate treatment is necessary should infection symptoms occur. It is recommended to avoid using this medication during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and its safety and efficacy have not been established in children under 18 years old. In cases of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so appropriate treatment should be conducted based on symptoms, and this medication should be kept out of reach of children. Lastly, caution is advised when driving or operating machinery due to the risk of hypoglycemia, especially when taken alongside insulin or sulfonylureas.
