This medication improves symptoms such as hypocalcemia, tetany (muscle cramping), bone pain, and bone lesions, caused by vitamin D metabolic disorders like chronic renal failure, hypoparathyroidism, vitamin D resistant rickets, and osteomalacia. It is also effective in the treatment of bone-related diseases such as osteoporosis, used to enhance bone health and relieve symptoms of these conditions.

How to take

Adult dose

For chronic renal failure and osteoporosis: administer 0.5 to 1 µg of Alfacalcidol orally once daily. For hypoparathyroidism and diseases associated with vitamin D metabolic disorders: administer 1 to 4 µg of this medication orally once daily.

Child dose

For osteoporosis: administer 0.01 to 0.03 µg per kg body weight orally once daily as Alfacalcidol. For other conditions: administer 0.05 to 0.1 µg per kg body weight orally once daily as this medication.

Precautions

This medication should not be taken by patients with hypercalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, or hypermagnesemia. Additionally, it should be avoided if the product of calcium and phosphorus in the blood exceeds a certain value or if the blood is alkaline. Individuals with symptoms of vitamin D overdose or allergies to this drug or its components should also refrain from using it. During treatment, magnesium-containing drugs, vitamin D related preparations, calcium preparations, or certain diuretics should not be taken together with this medication since these combinations may dangerously elevate blood calcium levels. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should consult a physician before using this medication, as should children, the elderly, and those with a history of kidney stones. Particularly, patients taking digitalis preparations should be cautious due to the risk of heart issues related to hypercalcemia. It is advisable to avoid breastfeeding while taking this medication, and if necessary to take it, it is best to stop breastfeeding. Various symptoms associated with hypercalcemia may occur during treatment, so if symptoms arise, discontinue use immediately and consult healthcare professionals. Symptoms may include gastrointestinal discomfort, neurological symptoms, heart problems, decreased kidney function, liver dysfunction, skin rash, and visual disturbances. Dosage must strictly adhere to instructions, with regular monitoring of blood calcium levels to prevent overdose. Additionally, dietary guidelines regarding calcium intake should be followed, and awareness of hypercalcemia symptoms is crucial. In case of overdose, immediately discontinue use and commence hypocalcemia treatment; emergency care may be necessary. Treatment in emergencies may include inducing vomiting, gastric lavage, forced diuresis, or dialysis. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, away from direct sunlight, in a cool and dry place. It’s important not to transfer it to another container to maintain its quality.
