Efficacy & effects

Improvement in blood pressure control for essential hypertension

  • Essential hypertension
View approved original text

Patients taking a combination of telmisartan and amlodipine for essential hypertension will find that this medication helps lower blood pressure. However, the current medication alone may not be sufficient for adequate blood pressure control. In such cases, it is necessary to consult a physician to consider additional medication adjustments or lifestyle improvements. Proper blood pressure control is crucial for reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases in essential hypertension. This combination therapy is used to effectively lower and manage blood pressure.

Precautions

This medication should not be used during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, as it can cause serious harm to the fetus. If pregnancy is confirmed, treatment should be discontinued immediately, and other safe treatment options should be considered. Patients with impaired liver function or progressing liver disease should exercise caution, as serious side effects such as hepatic encephalopathy may occur when taking this medication. Patients with severe renal disease may experience elevated blood nitrogen levels due to certain components of this medication, hence kidney function should be closely monitored. Patients with a history of allergy or hypersensitivity to this medication or its components should not use it. Breastfeeding women should also refrain from taking this medication, and it is recommended to discontinue nursing. Specific patients with severe liver disease, obstructive biliary conditions, severe aortic stenosis, or in shock should avoid this medication. Patients with excessively low blood pressure or severe renal failure, as well as those experiencing hypokalemia, hyponatremia, or hypercalcemia should use this medication with care. Since this medication lowers blood pressure, dizziness or orthostatic hypotension may occur initially, requiring caution. The elderly or dehydrated patients are at greater risk of hypotension, hence dosage adjustments may be necessary. During treatment with this medication, regular blood tests for potassium, sodium, creatinine, and kidney function should be conducted. This medication can interact with other antihypertensives, diuretics, lithium, digoxin, warfarin, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Therefore, if there are other medications being taken, it is essential to inform a physician or pharmacist. In the case of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, dizziness, and cardiac irregularities may occur, requiring immediate medical attention.
