This medication is used for patients with primary hypercholesterolemia, including familial and non-familial hypercholesterolemia, as well as those with mixed dyslipidemia. It helps lower total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, apolipoprotein B, triglycerides, and non-HDL cholesterol levels. Additionally, it can increase good cholesterol known as HDL cholesterol, which may positively affect cardiovascular health. Due to these effects, it significantly contributes to the improvement of blood lipid levels in patients who are following a dietary regimen. Therefore, this drug is used to aid cholesterol management in patients with dyslipidemia and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Precautions

This drug should not be used in patients with known allergies to specific components or a history of such reactions. Patients with active liver disease or persistently elevated liver enzyme levels should not be treated with this medication. Individuals with severe liver impairment or cholestasis should also avoid using this medication. It is not recommended for patients taking cyclosporine, patients with myopathy, pregnant or potentially pregnant women, breastfeeding women, and pediatric patients. Additionally, this drug is unsuitable for patients with lactose intolerance or certain genetic metabolic issues. Patients with mild to moderate liver dysfunction or a history of liver disease should use this drug cautiously and consider the potential for liver function deterioration. Those who consume excessive alcohol or have abnormal kidney function also require caution. Particularly, when used in conjunction with fibrates or niacin, the risk of muscle damage may increase, so concomitant use should be avoided or done carefully. Patients with hypothyroidism, genetic muscle disorders, a history of drug-induced myopathy, elderly individuals, and those with severe muscle weakness should also exercise caution when using this medication. This medication may cause various side effects such as muscle pain, muscle weakness, liver dysfunction, and allergic reactions; therefore, any unusual symptoms should be discussed with a doctor immediately. If muscle-related symptoms occur, blood tests should be performed to check for muscle damage, and administration should be stopped as necessary. Liver function tests should be conducted regularly before and after administration to monitor liver status. This medication is contraindicated in pregnant or breastfeeding women due to risks to the fetus and newborn. The safety and efficacy in pediatric patients have not been established, so it should not be administered to children. In elderly patients, side effects may present more frequently due to decreased physical function, requiring careful monitoring. This medication may interact with certain drugs, so patients taking other medications must inform their healthcare provider. In the case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, and treatment should be symptom-based along with liver and muscle function tests.
