This drug is used to improve symptoms such as hypocalcemia, tetany, bone pain, and bone lesions caused by vitamin D metabolism abnormalities. It is particularly effective in patients with chronic renal failure, hypoparathyroidism, and vitamin D resistant rickets or osteomalacia. It is also used in the treatment of osteoporosis to enhance bone health and improve bone density. Thus, it helps in alleviating and treating various bone-related conditions.

How to take

Adult dose

Chronic renal failure and osteoporosis: Administer alfacalcidol at 0.5 to 1 µg orally once daily. Hypoparathyroidism and other diseases due to vitamin D metabolism abnormalities: Administer this drug at 1 to 4 µg orally once daily.

Child dose

Osteoporosis: Administer alfacalcidol at 0.01 to 0.03 µg per kg of body weight orally once daily. Other conditions: Administer this drug at 0.05 to 0.1 µg per kg of body weight orally once daily.

Precautions

This drug should not be taken by patients with high blood calcium levels (hypercalcemia), high phosphate levels (hyperphosphatemia), or high magnesium levels (hypermagnesemia). Patients whose serum calcium and phosphate product is above a certain level or those who have alkalosis (excessively alkaline blood) should also not take this drug. People exhibiting toxic symptoms from excessive vitamin D or those allergic to this drug or its components should refrain from using it. While taking this drug, do not concurrently use medications containing magnesium, vitamin D and its derivatives, calcium-containing medications, or certain diuretics. Moreover, if you are breastfeeding, it is recommended to avoid taking this drug, and if it must be taken, it is advisable to stop breastfeeding. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should definitely consult a doctor before taking this medication due to potential harm to the fetus. Children and the elderly may require dosage adjustments and should be monitored closely due to differing physiological functions. Since there may be interactions with specific medications while taking this drug, consult an expert if you are taking other medications. If symptoms such as indigestion, vomiting, muscle spasms, headache, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, or decreased kidney function occur during use, immediately discontinue the drug and consult with medical personnel. Regularly monitor serum calcium levels and kidney function, and if abnormalities are detected, appropriate action should be taken. This drug can exacerbate hypercalcemia or hyperphosphatemia; therefore, control the intake of calcium from meals or supplements and be aware of related symptoms. Avoid excessive doses while taking this drug; if overdose is suspected, seek immediate emergency care and manage serum calcium levels per medical advice. Keep this drug out of the reach of children, avoid direct sunlight, and store it in a cool, dry place. To maintain quality, do not transfer it to another container, and prevent misuse or abuse.
