This medication is effective in improving symptoms such as hypocalcemia, tetany, bone pain, and bone lesions associated with vitamin D metabolism disorders due to chronic kidney disease, hypoparathyroidism, vitamin D resistant rickets, and osteomalacia. It is also used in the treatment of osteoporosis.

How to take

Adult dose

Chronic kidney disease/Osteoporosis: 0.5–1 µg orally once daily as alfacalcidol. Hypoparathyroidism, and other disorders due to vitamin D metabolism disorders: 1–4 µg orally once daily.

Child dose

Osteoporosis: 0.01–0.03 µg per kg body weight orally once daily as alfacalcidol. Other conditions: 0.05–0.1 µg per kg body weight orally once daily.

Precautions

This medication should not be taken by patients with abnormally high calcium, phosphorus, or magnesium levels in the blood or patients with vitamin D toxicity symptoms. While taking this medication, it is important to avoid concurrent use with magnesium-containing drugs, vitamin D and its derivatives, calcium-containing drugs, or certain diuretics. Women who are breastfeeding should avoid taking this medication if possible, as its safety has not been established; if necessary, it is recommended to stop breastfeeding. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should consult a doctor to determine whether to take this medication, as it may be harmful to the fetus. Children, the elderly, patients taking certain medications, and those with kidney stones or certain chronic diseases should consult a professional before taking this medication. If any abnormal symptoms occur during use, especially gastrointestinal, neurological, circulatory, renal, hepatic, skin, ocular, skeletal issues, or allergic reactions, immediately discontinue use and consult a professional. This medication may cause serious side effects such as hypercalcemia in case of overdose, so serum calcium levels should be monitored regularly, and the dosage should be adjusted accordingly. Control dietary calcium intake and be aware of the symptoms of hypercalcemia; if any abnormal symptoms occur, take immediate action. Store this medication out of reach of children, avoid direct sunlight and moisture, and keep in a cool place; do not transfer to other containers.
