This medication is used to improve symptoms caused by hypocalcemia, tetany, bone pain, and bone lesions resulting from vitamin D metabolism disorders. It is particularly effective for conditions such as chronic kidney failure, hypoparathyroidism, vitamin D resistant rickets, and osteomalacia. Additionally, it is utilized in the treatment of osteoporosis to help strengthen bones and improve bone density. These effects overall improve the patient's bone health.

How to take

Adult dose

Chronic kidney failure/osteoporosis: Administer 0.5 to 1 ㎍ orally once daily as alfacalcidol. Hypoparathyroidism and diseases due to other vitamin D metabolism disorders: Administer 1 to 4 ㎍ orally once daily as this medication.

Child dose

Osteoporosis: Administer 0.01 to 0.03 ㎍ per kg of body weight orally once daily as alfacalcidol. Other conditions: Administer 0.05 to 0.1 ㎍ per kg of body weight orally once daily as this medication.

Precautions

This medicine should not be taken by patients with hypercalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, or hypermagnesemia, which are conditions where calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood are elevated. Patients with alkalosis, caused by increased blood acidity levels, or those exhibiting toxic symptoms from excessive vitamin D intake should not use this medication. It should also be avoided if there is an allergy to any of the ingredients or vitamin D analogs in this medication. While taking this medication, it is important not to take drugs containing high levels of magnesium, vitamin D, calcium supplements, or certain diuretics concurrently. This medication is not recommended for breastfeeding women, and if it must be taken, breastfeeding should be avoided. Children, elderly patients, those taking certain medications, and individuals with conditions such as kidney stones or sarcoidosis should consult a professional before use.
