Improvement of hypertension and diabetic nephropathy
This medication is used to treat hypertension. It particularly helps in preventing or delaying the progression of nephropathy in patients with type 2 diabetes who have hypertension. Therefore, it is effective in reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases associated with hypertension and protecting kidney health.
This medication can be taken independently of meals, but it is recommended to take it at the same time every day. For the treatment of hypertension, adults are recommended to take 50 mg of losartan potassium orally once daily. Maximum blood pressure lowering effect occurs 3 to 6 weeks after starting treatment. If the treatment effect is insufficient, the same dosage can be divided into two doses taken orally per day, or may be increased to a maximum of 100 mg once daily if necessary.
For pediatric and adolescent patients aged 6 years and older and weighing between 20 kg and less than 50 kg, a dosage of 25 mg once daily is recommended, which may be increased to a maximum of 50 mg once daily based on blood pressure response.
This medication can cause severe harm to the fetus if taken during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters, so women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take it. Patients with a known allergy to this drug, severe liver impairment, or certain genetic disorders should not use it. Elderly patients, those with impaired renal function, or patients with hyperkalemia should use this medication cautiously as there is a risk of rapid blood pressure drop, requiring careful monitoring. Dizziness or drowsiness may occur while taking this medication, so caution is necessary when driving or operating machinery. While this medication is effective in lowering blood pressure, rare side effects such as liver dysfunction, worsening kidney function, blood disorders, and muscle pain may occur. Any unusual symptoms should prompt immediate consultation with a healthcare professional. Interactions may occur when taken with other medications, particularly potassium supplements, potassium-sparing diuretics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and lithium. Patients should inform their doctor if they are taking these medications. Taking this drug during pregnancy can lead to decreased renal function in the fetus, pulmonary developmental issues, skeletal malformations, etc., so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. During breastfeeding, there is a possibility that this drug may be excreted into breast milk, so it is advisable to discontinue nursing or avoid taking this medication. This drug is not indicated for children under 6 years of age or for children and adolescents with severely impaired renal function. In the case of overdose, hypotension and bradycardia may occur, requiring immediate medical attention. It is important to regularly monitor blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolyte levels while taking this medication for any abnormalities.
