Improvement of essential hypertension and chronic heart failure (supplementary treatment for elderly patients)
This medication is used to treat essential hypertension, which is characterized by elevated blood pressure. It is also administered as an adjunct to standard treatment in elderly patients over 70 years of age with mild to moderate chronic stable heart failure to help improve cardiac function. Therefore, it is effectively used for blood pressure control and alleviation of heart failure symptoms.
For adults with essential hypertension: Nebivolol 5 mg should be taken orally once daily at the same time. The blood pressure lowering effect typically begins 1 to 2 weeks after starting treatment, although it may take up to 4 weeks in some cases. It can be taken with food. For patients with renal impairment: The initial dose is 2.5 mg of Nebivolol taken orally once daily, with the option to increase the daily dose to 5 mg if needed. For the elderly (aged 65 years and over): The initial dose is 2.5 mg of Nebivolol taken orally once daily, with the option to increase the daily dose to 5 mg if needed.
This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, it should not be administered to those with allergies to this medication, bronchial asthma, severe heart failure, bradycardia (slow heart rate), hypotension, or those with significantly impaired liver or kidney function. Additionally, it is also safer for pregnant or nursing women to avoid using this medication. Caution should be exercised when using this medication in patients with special health conditions such as chronic lung disease, heart failure, peripheral vascular disorders, hyperthyroidism, diabetes, or the elderly. Various side effects may occur while taking this medication. For example, skin rash, vision impairment, bradycardia (reduced heart rate), dizziness, headaches, digestive disturbances, breathing difficulties, edema, and fatigue may arise. In severe cases, heart failure exacerbation, angioedema, and psychiatric symptoms may occur, which necessitates careful monitoring. Special care is needed before and after surgery when using this medication. The use of this medication can cause problems during surgical preparation, so it may need to be discontinued 24 hours before surgery. Additionally, if the heart rate becomes too slow, the dosage should be reduced, and any sudden discontinuation may lead to cardiac issues, so it should be tapered off gradually. This medication can interact with other medications; therefore, it should be taken with caution when used together with calcium channel blockers, antiarrhythmics, central acting antihypertensives, insulin, and antidepressants, and consultation with a physician or pharmacist is essential. Pregnant or nursing women are advised not to take this medication, and it is not recommended for children under 18 years of age as safety and efficacy have not been established. Elderly patients should start with a low dose while carefully monitoring their condition, and in cases of overdose, symptoms such as decreased heart rate, hypotension, and breathing difficulties may appear, requiring immediate medical attention.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
