Improvement of pancreatic exocrine insufficiency
This medication is used for pancreatic exocrine function disorders, which are diseases in which the pancreas does not properly secrete digestive enzymes.
The dose always varies depending on the severity of pancreatic damage and the composition of the meal. 1. Adults and adolescents 12 years of age and older The recommended dose is 20,000 ∼ 40,000 EP units of lipase activity per meal, as pancreatin powder. Depending on the degree of indigestion, the required dose may be considerably higher. In particular, in patients with cystic fibrosis, the enzyme dose required for adequate fat absorption must not be exceeded, and the amount and composition of the meal should be taken into account. Increase the dose cautiously and in relation to improvement in symptoms (e.g., steatorrhea, abdominal pain). Do not exceed 15,000 ∼ 20,000 EP units of lipase activity per kg of body weight per day or 4,000 EP units per g of fat intake. Take this medicine during or immediately after a meal with plenty of water. Chewing this medicine or opening the capsule may reduce its efficacy, and released enzymes may damage the oral mucosa. Therefore, swallow this medicine whole. If swallowing the capsule whole is difficult (e.g., in children or elderly patients), open the capsule, mix the contents with a liquid or soft food (pH < 5.5), and take immediately without chewing; swallow the contents immediately. The duration of treatment depends on the severity of the disease.
Children 4 years of age and older but younger than 12 years: Start with a weight-based dose of 500 EP units of lipase activity per kg of body weight per meal, as pancreatin powder.
This drug should not be taken by individuals who are allergic to beef or pork, or who have had hypersensitivity reactions to this drug or its components. Patients with acute pancreatitis or those whose chronic pancreatitis has suddenly worsened should not take this drug. When taking, the contents of the capsule should not be chewed, as this can cause injuries to the oral mucosa. People taking other medications must consult with their doctor or pharmacist before using this drug. Patients with cystic fibrosis should be cautious as symptoms of intestinal obstruction may occur while taking this drug. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should avoid this drug if its safety is not confirmed, unless absolutely necessary. Women who are breastfeeding should also be cautious, as this drug may be excreted in breast milk, and it is preferable not to take it unless essential. Individuals with gout, poor kidney function, or a history of hyperuricemia should exercise caution as this medication may raise blood uric acid levels. People allergic to porcine proteins should be cautious, as serious allergic reactions may occur when taking this medication. Those taking folic acid supplements should verify their folic acid levels, as this drug may interfere with folic acid absorption. Individuals taking diabetes medications such as acarbose or miglitol should monitor blood glucose levels closely, as this drug may affect blood sugar control when used in conjunction. Cystic fibrosis patients taking high doses should pay attention to abdominal symptoms and consult their doctor immediately if any abnormal symptoms appear. Gastrointestinal-related symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, diarrhea, and abdominal bloating may commonly occur. Rarely, allergic reactions such as skin rash, itching, hives, and anaphylaxis may occur, so if any unusual symptoms arise, immediately discontinue use and consult a specialist. This drug must be taken according to the prescribed usage and dosage, and especially in children, it should be administered under the supervision of a guardian. Since this drug contains extracts from porcine pancreas, the risk of viral infection is very low but cannot be completely eliminated, so caution is necessary. Be careful not to inhale fine powder while taking, as it may trigger asthma.
