Precautions

This medication consists of two active ingredients, empagliflozin and linagliptin, and is mainly used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. This medication should not be administered to certain patients. For example, individuals who are allergic to empagliflozin, linagliptin, or any other components of this medication, patients with type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, patients undergoing renal dialysis, and individuals with lactose intolerance or related genetic issues should not take this medication. Patients with impaired kidney function may experience altered effectiveness from this medication, so regular monitoring of kidney function should be performed before and during treatment. Additionally, patients with heart failure should use this medication with caution and it is not recommended for patients with severe heart failure. This medication may cause rare side effects such as pancreatitis or bullous pemphigoid, so if severe abdominal pain or skin blisters occur during use, consult a doctor immediately. The most common side effect is urinary tract infection, and other potential effects include hypoglycemia, thirst, cough, constipation, itching, and rash. Caution is especially necessary when taken in conjunction with insulin or sulfonylureas as the risk of hypoglycemia may increase. This medication can cause fluid loss or low blood pressure, so use it carefully in individuals with low blood pressure or in the elderly. Additionally, though rare, a severe infection known as Fournier's gangrene may occur, so if there is pain, fever, or swelling around the genital area, immediate medical treatment should be sought. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised not to use this medication and it is not safe or effective for children under 18 years old. In the event of an overdose, seek medical attention immediately and keep out of reach of children. Lastly, this medication may have a mild effect on driving or operating machinery, so caution is needed, especially when taken with other medications that have a risk of hypoglycemia.
