Precautions

This medication contains two active ingredients, empagliflozin and linagliptin, which assist in blood sugar control. However, this medication should not be used in certain patients for safety reasons. For instance, it should not be administered to individuals who have an allergy to the components, those with type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or patients undergoing dialysis. Additionally, it should be used with caution in patients with decreased kidney function or heart failure. Because kidney function can influence the efficacy of this medication, it is important to regularly monitor kidney function before and during treatment. During the course of taking this medication, rare side effects such as acute pancreatitis or bullous pemphigoid may occur; thus, patients should inform their doctor immediately if they experience severe abdominal pain or skin blisters. The most common side effect is urinary tract infection, which may occur more frequently in women. Other possible symptoms include genital infections, increased urination, fluid loss, and symptoms of hypoglycemia. Particularly, when taken with sulfonylureas or insulin, there is an increased risk of hypoglycemia, so blood sugar levels should be monitored frequently, and medication dosage adjusted if necessary. This medication may lower blood pressure, thus requiring more caution for patients with cardiovascular disease, elderly patients, or those with hypotension. If dehydration or fluid loss is suspected, immediate consultation with medical personnel is necessary. Pregnant or nursing women are advised not to take this medication, and particularly during breastfeeding, it is recommended to discontinue breastfeeding. Moreover, caution is necessary when driving or operating machinery due to the risk of hypoglycemia. Long-term use of this medication may report an increased risk of amputations of toes or lower limbs, so it is crucial to manage foot health carefully. Lastly, during the course of this medication, interactions with other drugs may occur, so it is essential to inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking other medications.
