Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication effectively aids blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes through the combined action of three components: empagliflozin, linagliptin, and metformin. Used in conjunction with diet and exercise, it significantly helps manage blood sugar. This medication lowers blood sugar and contributes to reducing the risk of diabetes complications through its composite actions. Therefore, it is used to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes.
The dosage of this medication is determined based on the current treatment regimen, efficacy, and tolerance for each patient, without exceeding the maximum daily dosages of each component: empagliflozin 25 mg, linagliptin 5 mg, and extended-release metformin hydrochloride 2000 mg. This medication is taken once daily in the evening with meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects related to metformin hydrochloride, and dosage adjustment of metformin hydrochloride should be performed when needed.
This medication may cause a rare side effect called severe lactic acidosis, which can lead to death. Therefore, it should not be used in certain patients, for instance, those with an allergy to the components of this medication or those with type 1 diabetes, patients undergoing dialysis, or patients with severe renal impairment. Additionally, it should be avoided or used cautiously in patients with acute infections, dehydration, congestive heart failure, or those scheduled for surgery, as these conditions may destabilize the body. Dosage adjustments are necessary based on renal function, and patients with impaired renal function should undergo regular blood tests to monitor renal status. Patients with heart failure or a history of pancreatitis require special caution when using this medication, and should immediately discontinue use if symptoms of acute pancreatitis occur. This medication can cause hypoglycemia; therefore, when used together with insulin or other hypoglycemic agents, dosage adjustments are necessary to reduce the risk of hypoglycemia. During treatment, irregular meals, vigorous exercise, or concurrent use of certain drugs can increase the risk of hypoglycemia and lactic acidosis, hence caution is advisable. This medication contains the dye Yellow No. 4, requiring careful use in patients allergic to this component. Major side effects include urinary tract infections, genital infections, hypoglycemia, pancreatitis, skin rashes, among others, and it is vital to consult a physician immediately if any abnormal symptoms arise. Especially in elderly patients or those at risk of fluid loss, caution regarding dehydration or hypotension is necessary, and regular blood pressure and blood tests are recommended. This medication should also be used with caution in patients with impaired liver function, and excessive alcohol consumption should be avoided. Moreover, while taking this medication, serious infections such as urinary tract infections or perineal necrosis may occur, so prompt notification to medical staff is essential if related symptoms appear. A skin condition known as blistering dermatitis herpetiformis may develop; hence, if blisters or rashes appear on the skin, immediate discontinuation and consultation with a specialist is advised. This medication should be taken whole without crushing or chewing the tablets, although the shell of the medication may be excreted in the stool, which is normal. Caution is also needed while driving or operating machinery due to the risk of hypoglycemia, especially when used alongside insulin. Finally, this medication may interact with other medications; therefore, if you are taking any other medicine, be sure to inform your doctor or pharmacist.
