This medication is used to improve symptoms such as hypocalcemia, tetany, bone pain, and lesions caused by vitamin D metabolism disorders. It is effective for conditions such as chronic kidney disease, hypoparathyroidism, vitamin D resistant rickets, and osteomalacia. It is also used in the treatment of osteoporosis to help maintain bone density and health. This drug alleviates symptoms of bone diseases and hypocalcemia related to vitamin D issues and improves bone health.

How to take

Adult dose

Chronic kidney disease and osteoporosis: administer 0.5 to 1 µg of alfacalcidol orally once a day. Hypoparathyroidism and other disorders due to vitamin D metabolism abnormalities: administer 1 to 4 µg of this drug orally once a day.

Child dose

Osteoporosis: administer 0.01 to 0.03 µg per kg body weight orally once a day. Other conditions: administer 0.05 to 0.1 µg per kg body weight orally once a day.

Precautions

This medication should not be taken by patients with hypercalcemia, hyperphosphatemia, or hypermagnesemia. It should also be avoided if the product of calcium and phosphate in the blood exceeds a certain level, or if there is metabolic alkalosis. Patients with symptoms of vitamin D toxicity or allergies to this drug or its components should not use it. It is advisable not to take magnesium-containing preparations, other vitamin D preparations, calcium-containing preparations, or certain diuretics while using this drug. Nursing women are advised to avoid breastfeeding while taking this medication, and should consult a physician if avoidance is not possible. Regularly check serum calcium levels and kidney function, and take appropriate actions if abnormalities are found. In case of overdose, stop taking the medication immediately and seek emergency treatment such as hypocalcemia therapy; dosage may be resumed after serum calcium levels return to normal. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, in a cool place protected from direct sunlight and moisture, and in a tightly closed container. It is also important to avoid misuse or abuse and not to transfer it to another container to maintain quality.
